I’ve seen the name Ivan Vaughan mentioned in connection with the Quarrymen.  Who was he?  And I’ve seen his surname spelled both “Vaughan” and “Vaughn”.  Which is correct?

Ivan Vaughan was a key person in the Quarrymen-Beatles story. He was a close neighbour and childhood friend of John, and later a schoolmate of Paul at Liverpool Institute High School. It was Ivan who brought Paul to the Quarrymen performance at St Peter’s Church Garden Fete in July 1957 so that Paul could see and meet his pal John. He effected the introduction between the two.  He also played "tea-chest" bass at a few group rehearsals and shows when Len Garry was unavailable.  So he wasn’t a regular member of the Quarrymen – but he was a very close friend of the group – and the key link between John and Paul.  He died young in 1993 of Parkinson’s Disease and is sorely missed by all who knew him.

His surname was definitely spelled Vaughan.  Perhaps the popularity in the 1960s of the actor Robert Vaughn (“The Man From U.N.C.L.E.”) contributed to many writers  especially from America – spelling Ivan’s surname in the same way as the actor.  But Ivan’s name was definitely VAUGHAN.
